KABUL: In a recent meeting of the UN Security Council, senior representatives from the UN and the United States expressed concerns regarding ongoing restrictions on women, the humanitarian crisis, and the deteriorating economic situation in Afghanistan.

Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, stated that widespread restrictions on women and girls are a major barrier to Afghanistan’s reintegration into the global community.

She emphasized that without improvements in human rights, particularly regarding women’s rights, there is no path for Afghanistan to return to international engagement.

Joyce Msuya, the UN Deputy Emergency Coordinator, warned that the people of Afghanistan are facing a severe humanitarian crisis, including hunger, drought, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

She noted that 3.7 million children are currently out of school, and the groundwater levels in Kabul are alarmingly decreasing.

Dorothy Shea, the U.S. representative to the UN, expressed concerns over rising poverty, unemployment, and further repression in Afghanistan.
