NEW DELHI: Sonia Gandhi, former leader of India’s Congress Party, strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government’s silence regarding the military crisis between Israel and Iran and the humanitarian situation in Gaza in an article published in The Hindu newspaper.
She wrote that the Modi government’s silence has led to a departure from India’s traditional moral approach, neglecting the country’s values. Gandhi emphasized that India should adopt a clearer stance and utilize its diplomatic capabilities to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
She reminded readers that India has always supported a two-state solution for the Palestinian issue, but the current government has put it aside this approach. Gandhi also highlighted India’s deep historical and cultural ties with Iran, noting that the Islamic Republic has cooperated more with India.
Referencing the strategic relationship between India and Israel, she viewed it as an opportunity for India to serve as a bridge for reducing tensions. She pointed out that millions of Indians live in the Middle East and that peace in the region is vital for India’s national security.
The Congress leader also attributed recent Israeli attacks on Iran to Western support and called for the condemnation of Israel’s violence and disproportionate responses against Palestinians, especially in light of over 55,000 Palestinian deaths and the critical situation in Gaza.
Gandhi accused the Indian government of remaining silent in the face of these atrocities and distancing itself from diplomatic commitments, stating that it is not too late for India to take a stand and use all diplomatic means to alleviate tensions.
