WASHINGTON: The U.S. Department of State has announced that foreign students wishing to study in the United States must respect the country’s people, government, culture, and other principles.
Reuters reported that the Trump administration had suspended all foreign student scholarships on May 27.
A State Department official, who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, stated that the new directive includes scrutiny of foreign students’ social media accounts to ensure no content is published that contradicts U.S. interests.
The official emphasized, “We will thoroughly check and monitor all individuals wishing to come to the U.S.”
Critics of the Trump administration have labeled this directive as a violation of human rights and personal freedoms.
