DOHA: The government of Qatar has called on the international community to enhance its financial and technical resources to ensure a dignified life for the people of Afghanistan and to fully fund the humanitarian response plan for the country.
The remarks were made by Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar, during interactive discussions with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan at the UN office in Geneva. This meeting was part of the 59th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.
Al-Suwaidi emphasized that Qatar will continue to fulfill its commitments as an active global partner. She noted that through its mediations and hosting meetings of special representatives for Afghanistan under the UN umbrella, Qatar has been able to strengthen international consensus on important issues and maintain humanitarian and developmental assistance to alleviate the humanitarian crises facing Afghans.
She stated that Qatar is committed to including human rights topics in its discussions with Afghan parties, particularly focusing on the participation of Afghan women in the peace process, the right to education, the guarantee of equal employment opportunities, and the protection of the rights of the entire Afghan population.
Al-Suwaidi highlighted that Afghans have suffered from decades of conflict, natural disasters, and terrorism, and that Afghanistan currently faces numerous humanitarian, social, political, security, and economic challenges, which impact efforts to promote and protect human rights.
The Qatari representative stressed that these challenges can only be addressed through extensive efforts to rebuild Afghan institutions, continue humanitarian and developmental assistance, and maintain dialogue and engagement with all Afghan parties to find solutions that pave the way for stability and progress.
