KABUL: UN humanitarian agencies have called for cooperation to combat severe hunger among Afghan women and children.
On Sunday, the agencies demanded urgent action to support children and women affected by malnutrition.
The United Nations emphasized that Afghanistan has one of the highest rates of hunger among children and women across 15 countries.
This call was made by UNICEF, the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and the UN Population Fund.
The agencies highlighted that over 3.5 million children under the age of five in Afghanistan are suffering from severe malnutrition, with 1.4 million facing life-threatening conditions. Additionally, one in ten women is affected by hunger, a situation that has largely been overlooked.
The UN stated, “The high level of food insecurity, largely caused by a fragile economy and environmental crises like drought, has left 9.8 million people facing serious food insecurity.”
This comes amid reports of a 40% decrease in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
