GENEVA: The 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council began today, in Geneva, focusing on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly gender discrimination and apartheid
According to the agenda, the latest report by Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, will be evaluated. This report, titled
“Access of Women and Girls to Justice and the Impact of Intersectional Discrimination,” describes their situation as highly concerning.
The report labels the actions against women as
“gender apartheid” and calls for it to be recognized as an international crime.
Human rights activists have urged the international community to pay immediate attention to the complex and critical situation of | women in Afghanistan. They argue that systemic discrimination, violence, and civil repression require urgent action.
Since the Taliban regained power, severe restrictions have been imposed on women’s rights, including bans on education and employment, as well as limitations on freedom of movement.
