MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed that NATO aims to re-enter Afghanistan under the pretext of security and regional stability.
Lavrov warned that NATO is attempting to restore its military presence in Afghanistan, describing it as a “deadly bomb” that could destabilize the region. Speaking at a meeting in Perm, he stated that any NATO presence in Afghanistan is unacceptable and could lead to a resurgence of conflict.
Despite Western countries, particularly the U.S., seemingly reducing their interest in Afghanistan—evidenced by President Trump’s elimination of the special envoy position—certain actions by Taliban leaders, including the prevention of girls’ education, suggest they may be paving the way for a return of the U.S. and NATO.
These actions resemble those taken by the Taliban prior to 2001, aimed at welcoming any foreign forces into Afghanistan.
Lavrov noted that it appears Western nations are seeking to interfere in Afghanistan again, despite having exited in a chaotic manner about four years ago.
He referenced efforts like the Doha consultative meetings under UN leadership, suggesting that while these may be presented as diplomatic initiatives, they could serve Western interests rather than contribute to regional stability.
Despite his criticisms, Lavrov clarified that Russia does not oppose Western engagement in Afghanistan, provided it is transparent and devoid of hidden agendas. Russia has previously shown readiness to cooperate with the West regarding Afghanistan.
It seems that Russia is seeking to gain some leverage over the West concerning Afghanistan.
Lavrov also stated that Russia remains committed to Afghanistan and will keep its embassy open in Kabul.
