Trump acknowledges Iran war contributed to Republican election defeat

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the war with Iran contributed to Republican losses in the midterm elections, which saw Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, 4 November, during a visit to the construction site of a new White House ballroom, Trump backed comments made by Vice-President JD Vance about the impact of the conflict on the election results.

Vance had said a day earlier that the war with Iran was a major factor behind the Republicans’ poor performance in the midterm elections.

Trump also pointed to rising petrol prices as one of the factors that may have influenced voters. However, he defended his decision to launch military strikes against Iran, saying he would make the same decision again if faced with similar circumstances.

He also reiterated that the United States could not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

The 3 November midterm elections saw Democrats make significant gains, securing control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The result is expected to pose a challenge to Trump’s domestic agenda for the remainder of his presidency.
