Former Afghan Vice-President Amrullah Saleh has said that those whose presence was linked to US support and funding after the 11 September 2001 attacks have either left Afghanistan or accepted the current situation.
He said the “genuine and indigenous” Afghans remained in the country and had not accepted the Taliban’s rule. Mr Saleh added that fluctuations in the intensity of armed resistance did not necessarily mean that the current “legitimate and just struggle” had lost momentum.
“Those who pour oil on the anti-Taliban struggle for the dignity and pride of the land and its people are the genuine and indigenous ones,” Saleh said. “They will prevail. Do not doubt it.”
