France has begun technical talks with the Taliban on the return of some Afghan migrants, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported, citing a diplomatic source. The people concerned do not have legal residency in France, and some are facing deportation because of criminal records or public security and order concerns.
According to the source, Paris is seeking a way to return the migrants directly to Afghanistan, following similar efforts by several other European countries. The talks are taking place despite France having no formal diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
French officials say the process is aimed at protecting public security and maintaining public order. However, the start of technical talks does not amount to recognition of the Taliban by France.
