German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that Russia is using hybrid attacks in an attempt to destabilise Germany, deepen divisions in society and weaken Berlin’s support for Ukraine.
Speaking in the city of Münster on Thursday, Merz said Germany was preparing for further hybrid attacks, including potentially serious ones. He also warned that Germany and its allies must not allow hybrid attacks and social media campaigns to fuel divisions within society.
The German chancellor said the Russian government wanted to push Germany away from its current position and was using every opportunity to create divisions in society and weaken the country.
German officials have previously accused Russia of carrying out hybrid campaigns, including cyberattacks and drone-related activities. The German government has also blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in August. Moscow has denied the allegations.
