Four members of the US Congress have urged the secretaries of state and homeland security to make an exception to allow Afghan refugees stranded at the Al-Sailiya camp in Qatar to be transferred to the United States.
Scott Peters, Seth Moulton, Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter on Tuesday, 29 September, to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.
In the letter, the lawmakers welcomed the decision to allow two members of an Afghan family to travel to the United States last week, and called for similar exceptions to be considered for other eligible Afghans remaining at the camp.
The lawmakers have previously called on the US administration to provide a pathway for Afghans who have undergone security screening and remain stranded in Qatar, including those who worked with US forces in Afghanistan.
The request comes as the future of hundreds of Afghans at the camp remains uncertain.
