Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, spokesperson for Pakistan’s military, has said Islamabad will support Saudi Arabia both diplomatically and militarily in the face of any threats against the kingdom.
Speaking to Arab News, Chaudhry said Pakistan was prepared to go “to any extent necessary” to defend Saudi Arabia and described Islamabad’s commitment to the kingdom’s security as “unconditional”.
He said the commitment also included protecting the two holy sites in Mecca and Medina.
The remarks come amid increased Houthi attacks on Saudi cities and oil infrastructure. A drone attack on the East-West oil pipeline damaged three pumping stations and temporarily disrupted the movement of oil through the port of Yanbu.
Saudi Arabia has since increased the movement of oil through Oman’s Sohar port to offset disruptions to exports through Yanbu, while some oil exports have continued.
Meanwhile, the Houthis and Saudi Arabia have accused each other of carrying out attacks in recent days, as tensions in the region continue.
