The US State Department has approved the potential sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a deal estimated at $24.3bn.

According to Reuters, the package would include aircraft made by Lockheed Martin, 49 engines supplied by Pratt & Whitney, communications equipment, spare parts and support services.

The deal still requires review by the US Congress before it can be finalised.

Reuters reported that the sale could affect the military balance in the Middle East and test Washington’s policy of maintaining Israel’s “qualitative military edge” in the region.
