The UN Security Council has discussed the situation in Afghanistan, including human rights concerns, restrictions on women and girls, the presence of militant groups and how the international community should engage with the Taliban.
Georgette Gagnon, the UN’s acting special representative for Afghanistan, said engagement with the Taliban remained necessary to address the country’s challenges, but did not amount to recognition of the group.
She urged the Taliban to lift restrictions on women and girls, work towards more inclusive governance and take action against terrorist groups
