Pakistan’s parliament has, for the first time, granted Field Marshal Asim Munir legal authority to command the country’s army, navy and air force.
Under the new arrangement, Munir will take precedence over the commanders of the navy and air force, who were previously his peers in the military hierarchy. He will also assume full control of Pakistan’s Strategic Plans Division, which oversees the country’s nuclear arsenal.
The legislation grants Munir lifelong immunity from criminal prosecution, while his removal from office would require a two-thirds majority in parliament.
The move further strengthens Munir’s position at the top of Pakistan’s military establishment. He is also leading efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States.
