Aisha Wahab has been sworn in as a member of the US House of Representatives, becoming the first Afghan American to serve in the US Congress.
Wahab took the oath of office on Wednesday, 2 September, in a ceremony at the US Capitol presided over by House Speaker Mike Johnson. She is representing California’s 14th Congressional District, filling the vacancy left by former Representative Eric Swalwell.
Wahab, a Democrat, won a special election in August to complete the remainder of Swalwell’s term, defeating fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez. She previously served in the California State Senate and on the Hayward City Council.
She is expected to face Hernandez again in the 3 November election, when voters will choose a representative for a full two-year term.
