UNAMA: Afghan media continue to face severe restrictions and pressure

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says media outlets in Afghanistan continue to face serious restrictions and pressure. In its latest report published on Tuesday (28 July), UNAMA said its human rights section had documented several cases of journalists being detained and media activities being suspended. According to UNAMA, these cases show that Afghanistan’s media sector continues to operate in a difficult environment marked by growing limitations. The UN report covers the human rights situation in Afghanistan from April to June 2026. It highlights cases of journalists being detained and imprisoned, pressure imposed on media outlets by authorities, and the closure of some media organisations. UNAMA added that some media outlets have also been forced to halt their operations due to financial difficulties.
