Britain’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has said he would publicly oppose US President Donald Trump if doing so was necessary to protect his country’s national interests, including over Iran. In his first major interview since taking office, Burnham said he had concerns about President Trump’s decision to launch the military campaign against Iran and stressed that he would not hesitate to speak out when he believed it was the right thing to do. His comments come as reports indicate that, one day after he became prime minister, a US B-1 bomber flew from RAF Fairford in England and took part in strikes on Iran. The UK government has said it authorised the United States to use British bases hosting American forces and aircraft for what it described as “defensive operations”.
