US intelligence agencies have launched an investigation into the possibility that Russia assisted Iran in attacks on CIA facilities in the Gulf, according to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter. The sources said US officials have not reached a definitive conclusion that Moscow was directly involved. However, the reported precision and effectiveness of the attacks, together with Russia’s extensive military and security cooperation with Iran, have raised concerns about a possible Russian role. The investigation follows a series of attacks in March in which Iran targeted facilities linked to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and several other countries.
