US President Donald Trump has told CNN that Washington and Tehran were close to reaching an agreement on Saturday, but said the situation changed after Iran allegedly carried out a drone attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz hours later. Mr Trump said Iran had been “agreeing to everything”, but claimed the reported attack altered the course of events. He also said the United States had delivered a “very hard blow” to Iran overnight in response to recent attacks on shipping in the strategic waterway. The comments come amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
