Former US President Barack Obama has said voters want a politics that brings people together rather than deepening divisions in society, following the Democrats’ gains in the US midterm elections.
In a post on X on Tuesday, 3 November, Obama wrote: “The American people sent a clear message. They want a politics that brings people together, not drives us apart, and leaders who offer practical solutions to the challenges facing the country.”
Praising Democratic candidates, he said the party’s victories in several areas, including districts where success had previously seemed unlikely, reflected the strength of its candidates and their hard work.
The former president urged Democrats to use the opportunity to organise, make progress on reforms in areas where they hold power and prevent further damage.
His comments came after the Democrats took control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 3 November midterm elections, dealing a major setback to the Republican Party and President Donald Trump.
