Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Michigan, is competing against Republican candidate Mike Rogers in a race that could mark a historic milestone in American politics.

If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim ever elected to the US Senate.

El-Sayed, who is of Egyptian descent, previously served as director of the Detroit Health Department and held senior public health roles in Wayne County. He also ran for governor of Michigan in 2018 but lost in the Democratic primary.

His potential election would represent a historic breakthrough for Muslim representation in the US Senate.
