Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban government, says mediation efforts by regional countries and exchanges of messages between officials in Kabul and Islamabad have so far failed to produce any clear results in resolving tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Speaking to Radio Hurriyat, Mujahid said Afghanistan was not responsible for creating the problems and that the Taliban government wanted the dispute to be resolved peacefully.

Turkey, China, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are among the countries that have made repeated attempts to mediate between Kabul and Islamabad and ease tensions.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, accused the Taliban government of allowing militant groups to use Afghan territory as a safe haven.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on 30 October, Jadoon claimed that several militant groups were operating from Afghanistan with impunity.

He said Pakistan had suffered more than any other country from attacks originating in Afghanistan, claiming that more than 4,700 Pakistani civilians had been killed in terrorist attacks over the past three years.
