Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran’s proposed plan to end tensions, which was initially designed to last seven days, has now been shortened to a two-day programme.

Under the proposal, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened on the second day if the United States meets Iran’s conditions on the first day.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Araghchi said discussions on the proposal were continuing with Qatar acting as a mediator, but no final agreement had been reached.

He stressed that his recent visit was not intended for direct negotiations with the United States, adding that the implementation of the proposed plan would depend on Washington’s response to Tehran’s questions and demands.

The Iranian foreign minister also said the Islamic Republic was prepared both to defend itself and to pursue a diplomatic solution. He added that the next course of action would depend on the US response and approach.

His remarks come amid reports that several oil tankers have been targeted in the Gulf, including a Qatari gas carrier. The incidents have drawn condemnation and reactions from various quarters.
