China’s central bank bought 23 tonnes of gold in September, its largest monthly purchase since September 2023, according to the figures provided.

The latest purchase follows the addition of 20 tonnes in each of July and August, extending China’s gold-buying streak to 23 consecutive months.

China has officially added 103 tonnes of gold to its reserves so far in 2026, bringing its total holdings to a record 2,410 tonnes.

The country is currently the world’s fifth-largest official gold holder, behind the United States, Germany, Italy and France.

Italy holds 2,452 tonnes of gold, while France has 2,437 tonnes. If China maintains its current pace of purchases, it could overtake both countries by the end of this year.

China’s continued accumulation of gold highlights its ongoing efforts to strengthen its official reserves.
