The New York Times has reported divisions and a lack of coordination among senior Iranian officials over attacks on several vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in July.
According to the newspaper, President Masoud Pezeshkian was angered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ decision to attack the ships and described the move as ill-considered.
The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, said Ahmad Vahidi, a senior Iranian security official, also distanced himself from the attack. He reportedly told Pezeshkian that even Iran’s Supreme National Security Council did not know exactly who had ordered the operation.
The New York Times also reported growing political tensions among senior figures following the incident. It said Hossein Taeb, a former senior intelligence official and cleric, told Iran’s Supreme Leader that ending the war had been a mistake.
The report comes amid continuing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global shipping and energy supplies.
