Gilles Bertrand, the European Union’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, has announced that he has ended his mission in the country.
In a post on X, Bertrand said Afghanistan and its people remain important to Europe, adding that the EU’s approach since 2021 reflects that importance.
He also stressed the need for dialogue and the participation of all sections of Afghan society, particularly women and young people, saying they are essential to achieving stability in Afghanistan.
Bertrand said he was ending his tenure with the belief that dialogue among all parts of Afghan society was the only way forward.
Bertrand previously served in Afghanistan, including as head of the political section of the EU delegation in Kabul from 2002 to 2004.
