Reuters reports that al-Qaeda has weakened significantly in the 25 years since the 11 September attacks, but the group and its affiliates remain active in several parts of the world.
The report says al-Qaeda retains networks in Afghanistan and Pakistan, while affiliated groups continue to operate in parts of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
Osama bin Laden was killed in a US operation in 2011, while his successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed in a US air strike in Kabul in 2022.
Reuters says Saif al-Adel, an Egyptian militant, is regarded as al-Qaeda’s de facto leader. The Taliban deny allegations that they support al-Qaeda.
