Nepal is observing a national day of mourning for the victims of devastating floods and landslides that struck the country on 26 August.

The government has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast at government offices across the country and at Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. The mourning day coincides with the traditional 13th day of mourning observed in Hindu communities.

At least 1,342 bodies have been recovered, while thousands of people remain unaccounted for, according to the latest official figures. Search and rescue operations are continuing in the worst-affected areas.

The floods, triggered by a glacier collapse, caused widespread destruction across northern Nepal, damaging homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.
