The United Nations says nearly 2.7 million Afghans are expected to return to Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran between April and December 2026.
A 2026 response plan by the UN and its partner organisations says returnees will receive immediate humanitarian assistance, followed by support for resettlement and reintegration.
The UN has warned that the large number of returnees could place further pressure on humanitarian aid and essential services in Afghanistan.
