Afghanistan rights watchdog calls for reopening schools for girls

The Afghanistan Human Rights Watch has renewed its call for girls to be allowed to continue their education beyond the sixth grade. In a statement on Friday, the organisation quoted a girl who has been denied access to education as saying: “My books are still waiting for me, and I am still waiting too. My dream is to return to school and study without fear.” The group said it has repeatedly urged the reopening of secondary schools for female students, which have remained closed for nearly five years. International organisations and governments have also repeatedly called for Afghan girls to be allowed to return to school, but the Taliban have so far not responded to those appeals.
