The United Nations agency for gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women, has warned that declining international aid, combined with ongoing restrictions on women in Afghanistan, is pushing women’s support organisations to the brink of closure. A survey of 74 Afghan women-led organisations found that at least one million women and girls have lost access to essential services since January 2025. The report also said that more than half of the surveyed organisations fear they may be forced to shut down within the next 12 months due to financial difficulties. UN Women said the reduction in funding and continued restrictions on women’s rights are threatening the delivery of critical services, including healthcare, education, and protection programmes for women and girls across Afghanistan.
