US President Donald Trump has said that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is “90% likely” to no longer be active in the political arena. Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Monday,Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly weakened. He said: “Iran no longer has a navy, it no longer has an air force, everything is gone. Their air defence systems have been destroyed and all of their leaders have been killed.” Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public for around four and a half months, following US and Israeli air strikes in which his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed. He was also absent from his father’s funeral and memorial ceremonies. Iranian officials have said his absence is due to ongoing security threats. Iranian authorities have not yet officially confirmed or denied Trump’s claims.
