US President Donald Trump says Washington will reinstate a naval blockade on Iran and take responsibility for protecting the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said the measure would target Iranian-linked vessels and cargoes, while allowing other countries to use the strategic waterway freely. He said the United States would act as the “guardian of the Strait of Hormuz” and would charge 20% of the value of cargo passing through the route to cover security and protection costs. The announcement comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iran has claimed that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, while US officials insist the key maritime route remains open for lawful international shipping.
