Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the acting head of Afghanistan’s mission to the United Nations, has said that a culture of impunity in the country has contributed to an increase in mysterious killings, sexual violence and other crimes. In a post on X, Faiq said the weakening of the rule of law and the justice system were among the main factors behind the situation. He stressed that true security is not limited to the absence of war, but also requires the protection of citizens, justice and accountability. He said women, children and other vulnerable groups are bearing the greatest burden of the current situation. Some human rights organisations have also expressed concerns over access to justice in Afghanistan and the handling of cases involving violence against women. The Taliban have rejected such criticism and maintain that security has improved across the country.
