NATO leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to collective defence at the end of their summit in Ankara, stressing that an attack on one member of the alliance would be considered an attack against all allies. In their final statement issued on Wednesday, NATO leaders agreed to strengthen military capabilities, particularly in air and missile defence, while increasing investment in defence industries and military budgets. The alliance also called on Iran to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and reiterated that Tehran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. The summit took place amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran. US President Donald Trump also announced on the sidelines of the meeting that the “ceasefire memorandum” with Iran had come to an end.
