Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the United States not to sell F-35 fighter jets or advanced military technology to Turkey, warning that such a move would upset the balance of power in the Middle East. His remarks come ahead of US President Donald Trump’s expected visit to Ankara for the NATO summit, which Turkey sees as an opportunity to advance talks on acquiring engines for its indigenous KAAN fighter jet programme. In an interview with Fox News, Mr Netanyahu said Washington should not reward Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with advanced military technology, accusing him of “openly calling for Israel’s destruction.” Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the Trump administration was moving ahead with plans to sell dozens of General Electric jet engines worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Turkey, despite opposition from some members of the US Congress. The engines are intended for Turkey’s domestically developed KAAN fighter jet programme.
