U.S. House Rejects Bill to Limit Presidential War Powers in Lebanon

The U.S. House of Representatives has rejected, for a second time, legislation seeking to restrict presidential authority to deploy American forces in military operations inside Lebanon without prior congressional approval. The bill, introduced by Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, was defeated by 235 votes to 189, despite revisions made to the original proposal. Under the amended version, the president would have been required to withdraw U.S. forces from any combat operations in Lebanon within seven days of the bill’s passage. However, provisions were included to allow continued security cooperation with Lebanese forces and the protection of U.S. diplomatic facilities. Democratic leaders said the amendment reflected the fact that U.S. forces are not currently engaged in combat operations in Lebanon. The vote comes amid continued tensions along Lebanon’s southern border and renewed political debate in Washington over the extent of presidential military authority and congressional oversight.
