Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, departed Islamabad on Tuesday evening at the end of his one-day official visit to Pakistan. The visit included separate meetings with Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan, and Shehbaz Sharif, the country’s Prime Minister. During the meetings, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Islamabad’s continued diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region, stating that Pakistan supports dialogue and negotiation as the best approach to resolving regional crises. He also expressed hope that ongoing technical talks between Tehran and Washington would result in a durable agreement, and announced that he will visit Iran next week. In a joint statement, Pakistani officials welcomed recent negotiations between Iran and the United States, describing them as a step toward reducing regional tensions. Asif Ali Zardari also reiterated Pakistan’s support for diplomacy and dialogue in resolving regional and international disputes. Pezeshkian said Iran attaches priority to its relations with Pakistan in its foreign policy and stressed the expansion of political, economic, and security cooperation between the two countries. The joint statement described the visit as the beginning of a “new phase of strategic cooperation” between Tehran and Islamabad.
