Zahran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York, has said that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military since the purported ceasefire in Gaza. In a television interview on Monday, 22 June, Mamdani said that children in Gaza are being killed on a daily basis, describing the situation as “immoral”. He also referred to the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Ahmed Weishah in an Israeli air strike, saying the incident reflected the ongoing realities on the ground in Gaza. Responding to questions regarding his comments about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Mamdani said the organisation supports the “status quo” and opposes efforts aimed at ensuring security for people in Palestine and across the region. Mamdani stressed that any assessment of the continuing killings and violence abroad should also take into account the role of institutions and groups that, in his view, contribute to the perpetuation of the situation.
