Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has said that talks aimed at reaching a possible agreement between Iran and the United States are moving in the “right direction”. Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported on Monday, 25 May, that Islamabad has stepped up its diplomatic efforts in recent days to help reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington. Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had acted with “sincere intentions” to mediate between the two countries and expressed hope that these efforts would help restore peace and mutual understanding. Meanwhile, Syed Asim Munir and Syed Mohsin Naqvi travelled to Tehran last weekend and held meetings with Iranian officials. Despite these diplomatic moves, it remains unclear whether Tehran and Washington will reach a final agreement in the coming days. Disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and regional issues continue to be among the main challenges in relations between the two countries.
