Afghan Woman Wins Seat in London Council Elections

Rabia Nasimi, an Afghan-British woman, has won a seat in local council elections in west London as a representative of Britain’s Labour Party. Nasimi contested from the East Acton ward and secured the council seat after receiving 1,207 votes. She moved to Britain with her family in 1999 during the first Taliban rule in Afghanistan and is currently based in London. Nasimi is known as a human rights and refugee rights activist and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge.
