Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, has arrived in Beijing on his first visit to China since the outbreak of war with the United States. Al Jazeera reported early on Wednesday, 6 May, that Araghchi has held three telephone conversations with his Chinese counterpart since the beginning of the hostilities. According to reports, maintaining a ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz are among the main focuses of the visit—issues that China has also emphasised. China has meanwhile criticised what it describes as the United States’ blockade of Iranian ports, while also expressing concerns over Tehran’s role in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Iranian officials are seeking to clarify Beijing’s position regarding potential support in the event of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as continued cooperation at the United Nations in the face of possible new sanctions.
