According to reports, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have announced separate ceasefires in the ongoing war between the two countries, ahead of Russia’s “Victory Day” commemorations. Media reports say Putin stated that a two-day ceasefire will be observed on 8 and 9 May to mark the anniversary of victory in World War II. He warned that if Ukraine violates the ceasefire, large-scale attacks would follow. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence said the ceasefire would be implemented based on the decision of the country’s commander-in-chief and called on Ukraine to adhere to it. In response, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would implement a separate ceasefire from midnight between 5 and 6 May. He stressed that the decision was made in consideration of protecting civilian lives and reducing violence. The separate ceasefires come as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, with efforts to reduce tensions yet to produce a lasting outcome.
