China has announced the discovery of 225 new oil and gas fields within its borders over the past five years, a move that could strengthen the country’s energy resources amid global supply constraints. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the discoveries include 13 oil fields with reserves exceeding 100 million tons each and 26 gas fields with reserves of more than 100 billion cubic meters. The ministry did not provide details on recoverable volumes but stated that natural gas production is expected to continue rising, while oil output will be maintained at around 200 million tons annually. Chinese officials emphasized that exploration efforts will continue as part of broader energy policies aimed at enhancing national energy security. Reports also indicate that China has invested over 450 billion yuan in expanding its oil and gas reserves over the past decade—an effort experts say could help reduce the country’s dependence on imports.
