U.S. Court Decision Brings Renewed Hope for Afghan Asylum Seekers

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has welcomed a recent federal court ruling in the United States, which mandates the continued processing of Afghan asylum applications without further delay. In a statement released on Tuesday evening, CAIR said the ruling followed a legal challenge filed by the organization against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The decision ensures that long-pending cases—some of which have remained unresolved for years—will now proceed. According to CAIR, the U.S. government had previously attempted to dismiss the case by citing a suspension of application processing from so-called “high-risk” countries. Faiza Dawla, Deputy Legal Director at CAIR, emphasized that the government cannot evade its obligations under immigration law, adding that Afghan asylum seekers are entitled to fair and lawful treatment, just like other applicants. CAIR, which describes itself as a civil rights organization advocating for Muslims in the United States, stated that its mission includes promoting justice and protecting the rights of immigrants.
