A court in Nairobi has approved the extradition of Afghan politician Zahir Qadir to the United States. His lawyer said they will appeal the decision in the High Court. Qadir is accused by U.S. authorities of drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession. His family and lawyer reject the charges, calling them political. The judge ruled that the lower court’s decision was lawful and that extradition is allowed under international law, even without a formal treaty between Kenya and the U.S. Qadir was present in court when the ruling was announced. He was arrested in May 2025 in Nairobi. His lawyers say the alleged crimes relate to events between November 2024 and March 2025. Qadir is a former Afghan MP from Nangarhar and later served as deputy speaker of parliament.
