Bennett Warns EU–Taliban Talks May Violate Refugee Rights

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, has expressed concern over reports that the European Union may host Taliban representatives in Europe to discuss the deportation of Afghan migrants, warning that such moves could breach international law. Bennett stated that any forced returns could violate the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits sending individuals back to countries where they may face persecution or harm. The remarks come amid reports that such meetings are being considered in Brussels, potentially focusing on mechanisms for returning Afghan migrants without legal residency. The proposal has also drawn criticism from some European lawmakers, who have cautioned against legitimizing the Taliban through cooperation on deportation processes. Meanwhile, the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Gilles Bertrand met with Mohammad Naeem Wardak in Kabul, where the two sides discussed political and economic relations, as well as continued cooperation.
