The United Nations, marking International Women’s Solidarity Day, stated that for millions of girls and women around the world, rights exist only on paper and are not upheld in practice. In a statement issued on Wednesday (March 13), the organization emphasized that justice must be real, accessible, and enforceable, and called on all stakeholders to work toward delivering tangible justice for women. In Afghanistan, millions of women and girls remain deprived of their fundamental rights, and in recent years many of these rights have been curtailed even at the legal level. According to decrees and directives issued by the Taliban, women have lost a significant portion of their basic rights, including the right to education, employment, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, the right to choose, and meaningful participation in public life.
